The JIB gold card is an ECS card issued by the Joint Industry Board to electricians who hold a recognised Level 3 qualification and have completed an approved apprenticeship or an equivalent assessed route.
It is the electrical industry's equivalent of a skilled or advanced craft card. The colour indicates the grade rather than the employer or the type of work.
The grading structure
ECS cards are graded so that a site team can tell at a glance what the holder is qualified to do.
- Gold — Electrician, Approved Electrician, Technician and Senior Authorised Person grades.
- Blue — Installation electrician and other qualified grades below electrician level.
- Green — Labourer or non-electrical site operative working for an electrical contractor.
- Red — Apprentice, trainee or experienced worker, time limited.
- White — Related discipline or manager grades, including project and contracts management.
Eligibility
The standard route to a gold electrician card is completion of an approved electrical apprenticeship, a Level 3 NVQ in Electrotechnical Services and the AM2 assessment of competence.
Experienced electricians without a formal apprenticeship can qualify through the Experienced Worker Assessment, which combines evidence of on-site work with the Level 3 NVQ and the AM2E assessment.
The approved electrician grade sits above electrician and requires additional experience together with the Level 3 qualification in the inspection, testing and certification of electrical installations.
All applicants must also pass the ECS Health, Safety and Environmental assessment within the two years before applying, and the card runs for three years before renewal.
What the card evidences
A gold card evidences three things at once: the holder's identity, a verified Level 3 electrical qualification, and a current health and safety assessment. It does not certify the holder's employer or authorise any specific installation work.
Main contractors use the card to satisfy their own competence duties under CDM. Many electrical packages specify that a stated proportion of the labour on site must hold gold cards, with apprentices supervised by a gold card holder.
Cards are verified with the ECS Check app or the JIB online checker. As with CSCS, a visual check is not enough — the digital record confirms the photo, grade and expiry date.
Using gold card labour
When ordering electrical labour, specify the grade rather than the card colour alone, since gold covers several grades. Confirm whether the package needs an approved electrician for inspection and testing.
