01What we supply

Electrician's Mates for live sites, not a database of CVs

Hard Hat supplies electrician's mates and improvers to electrical subcontractors, M&E contractors and fit-out packages across London and the M25. Carded mates for containment, tray and basket, first fix and second fix support, and improvers working toward their qualification who can be paired with a qualified electrician.

Electrical programmes usually get squeezed between the frame and the finishes, and the quickest way to protect your qualified operatives' time is to put mates alongside them.

One mate or several across a floor plate. No minimum order, and short bookings receive the same card verification, right-to-work checking and insurance cover as long-term placements.

02What you get

Every electrician's mate is checked before they reach your gate

Vetting is done before we put someone forward, not after you have inducted them. The evidence sits in our compliance pack and we will send it for your PQQ.

ECS card verified

Checked live against the ECS register for the correct classification — Electrical Labourer or Electrical Improver — rather than accepted as a claim.

Level of competence recorded honestly

A mate who can pull cable and install containment is not the same as an improver mid-qualification. We tell you which you are getting.

Right to work

Originals or share code checked in person, with expiry tracking.

Containment and tooling experience

We confirm what the operative has actually installed — tray, basket, trunking, conduit — because containment competence is where the value of a mate sits.

References from an electrical contractor

We prefer references from the qualified electrician the operative worked alongside, not a general site manager.

04Before you call

What to tell us when you call

Six answers and we can price it and start searching on the same call.

  1. 01

Whether you need a labouring mate, or an improver who can work more independently under supervision.

  2. 02

The work in front of them: containment, cable pulling, first fix, second fix support or testing assistance.

  3. 03

Containment type — tray, basket, trunking, conduit — and whether at height.

  4. 04

Access equipment provided and whether IPAF or PASMA is required.

  5. 05

Numbers, start date, duration and hours including any night or weekend work.

  6. 06

Site postcode, induction arrangements and the qualified electrician they will be paired with.

05Trades that go together

Most sites need more than one trade

We staff the whole package rather than a single line on your requirement, so one call covers the gang.

06Questions from hirers

Hiring electrician's mates — frequently asked

A mate assists — carrying, pulling cable, installing containment and preparing the work in front of a qualified electrician. An improver is part-qualified and working toward their card, and can usually be given a defined piece of work under supervision. They price differently and we will not describe one as the other to win a booking.

No, and you should be cautious of any agency that says otherwise. Mates work under the direction of a qualified electrician. What a good mate does is protect your qualified operatives' time, which is where the commercial gain sits.

Yes — qualified and approved electricians are supplied through our MEP recruitment service. Tell us the mix you need and we can staff both sides of the pairing.

Many do, and we verify it where your work needs it. Containment at height on a MEWP or tower is a specific requirement, so name it at booking rather than assuming the card covers it.
